Coaching is the process of establishing a one-on-one formal relationship in which a coach collaborates with a client to help the individual make the necessary decisions to accomplish their desired goal (Ely, Boyce, Nelson, Zaccaro, Hernez-Broome, Whyman, 2010). Career Coaching Services facilitate this relationship using a number of techniques to deepen learning and move the client forward toward accomplishing their goal. The techniques employed during coaching usually allow clients to learn more about themselves, achieve broader perspectives, develop S.M.A.R.T goals, and design a plan of action (Kimsey-House, Sandahl, Whitworth, 2011). As a result of coaching or executive leadership coaching, clients become empowered to use the new information learned about themselves to improve their ability to make sound decisions and accomplish current and future goals.

Coaching v. Mentoring and Counseling
In a mentoring relationship, the mentor usually has a higher degree of involvement in the life of the client and there is usually no formal agreement. The coach has no involvement in the life of the client outside of coaching sessions and usually holds the client to a formal agreement. The counselor is usually seeking to treat a clinical issue, while focusing on the emotional well-being of a client, as opposed to the coach who does not seek to treat the client for a clinical issue but is seeking to move the client toward some form of action. Being mindful of these coaching distinctions can help clients to decide if a coach is “right” for them.
