David Rhoden was born in St. Catherine, Jamaica (West Indies) and moved to the United States with his parents at a very young age. He grew up in West Philadelphia attending Philadelphia public schools from Kindergarten through 12th grade. He graduated as class Valedictorian from Swenson Arts and Technology High School before going on to attend college at The Pennsylvania State University (main campus). At Penn State he acquired a Bachelor of Science Degree in Actuarial Science from the Smeal College of Business. Upon graduation he accepted a position with The ACE Group (now Chubb Ltd), a multi-national insurance company where he worked closely with senior management as part of their early career rotational program. During that year he worked with small niche team providing internal consulting on accounting policy, SOX controls and actuarial reporting.
One year after joining ACE (now Chubb Ltd), David decided to put his career on hold to pursue a calling to serve the needs of others on a full-time basis and deepen his Christian faith. He dedicated the next year to helping address the dropout crisis by serving as full-time tutor and mentor to Philadelphia public school students with City Year Incorporated, a national education non-profit organization and decided to take courses at Palmer Theological Seminary. He later joined the City Year staff helping to manage the volunteer program and support local site operations including program development and corporate relations. While on staff David enjoyed spearheading strategic initiatives, developing the skills of his team members and providing 1-on-1 coaching support. During this time, David gained a new awareness of his abilities and interests which greatly influenced his decision to pursue a career in human resources.
After two years with City Year, David returned to the private sector with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to incorporating his passion for people into his career. He enrolled in a Master’s program at Saint Joseph’s University where studied Organization Development and Leadership deepening his knowledge in adult learning theory, leading change, career development and coaching. Since receiving his degree David has worked on a number of large-scale HR initiatives (organizational culture, employee engagement, employee productivity, organization design, labor relations, employee relations, HR shared services, diversity & inclusion, and talent acquisition.) leveraging data and analytics to improve the employee experience and enable organization effectiveness. While working with diverse teams and professionals throughout his career, David further developed his coaching skills and his ability to help people make better decisions regarding their specific issue.
Prior to starting his consultancy, my Career Rescue (under The Rhoden Group, LLC) David served as the Director of HR Reporting and Analytics for Aramark a global food, facilities and uniforms service provider with 270,000 employees operating in 21 countries around the world. In his role David designed and deployed a new analytics function into the HR department, including building its strategy and delivering workforce insights. He managed a staff of 5 consisting of three full-time professionals, one contractor, and one intern with a budget just shy of $1 million. This role allowed David to combine his passion for people and leading teams with his passion for data and analytics. While he enjoyed managing his own function, and embedding a data-driven approach into the HR department, his favorite activity was working 1-on-1 with his team, developing their skills and coaching their performance.
Having an entrepreneurial spirit David finally decided to take a risk to start his own practice that would provide people with the support they needed to become more engaged at work, and advance their careers. He started a blog then podcast called Before You Take Your Next Step and received great feedback from career seekers, but also learned about more struggles and challenges people were having at work. This led him to launch my Career Rescue, to help individuals get “unstuck” and work toward achieving their most meaningful goals. In addition to managing his consultancy, David is also a Licensed Realtor with Keller Williams Real Estate in Montgomeryville, PA and a Career Coach with the Career Services department at Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, PA. David is committed to helping people ‘find their place’ both at work and at home.
When not working David enjoys volunteering his time City Year Philadelphia, an education based non-profit seeking to end the national dropout crisis through citizen service and civic leadership. Lastly, his most absolute favorite time is spent enjoying time with his lovely wife and young daughter.
